Top Outfit Ideas for your Couple Session
Once you’ve booked a couple’s photo session, you’re probably wondering if there’s anything you need to prepare in order to get the best out of your pictures. One of the most important questions to consider is what should you both wear?
- It goes without saying that you’ll want to feel like yourselves and be totally relaxed. Freedom to move around is so important – to embrace each other, walk (or run and jump!) around, and sit together comfortably.
- Take advantage of the season and put together clothes that are in tune with the climate and location. My best tip is to think of footwear first and work up! If you’re going on a hiking trail, boots will be a necessity and will pair naturally with cosy layers, but if you’re going barefoot or in sandals on the beach, an open-neck shirt, rolled up chinos and a floaty dress would look beautiful.
- Opt for looks that flatter your body type and accentuate your favourite features.
You won’t want to feel self-conscious in a skirt you can hardly breathe in, or shorts that you have to keep tugging down. If you’re not a dress person, but still want something special, a stylish jumpsuit is a great alternative.
- Think about your chosen photographer’s style. If you adore their muted tones and the dreamy, almost sepia feel to their images, choose colours that will fit in well with this approach. Neutral colours like browns, greens, creams and beiges would work perfectly. If your chosen photographer has a bold and colourful style, pastels contrasted with black and white would give your pictures a ‘pop’.
- Tie everything together with a simple colour scheme and theme. Avoid patterned prints which are a visual distraction – the clothes shouldn’t be the focus of the photograph over the people in it. The best outfits for a couple’s photoshoot complement each other, but don’t match exactly. You can create synergy by pairing the style over the items. For instance, you could decide on a relaxed boho vibe or a rock’n’roll edgy look, whatever suits your personal tastes.
- Incorporate an accessory – a scarf, statement earrings or a hat is enough to give your outfit the wow factor, and is easy to take on and off for variety during the session.
- If you really don’t know where to begin, ask your partner if they have a favourite piece or outfit in your wardrobe. It’s fun to look back at old pictures of the two of you together and see if anything stands out as having a really happy memory associated with it. Perhaps the shirt he wore when he proposed, or the jacket you had on when you went to see an unforgettable concert? These things will add an extra, sentimental dimension to your photographs.
THE 3H
When it comes to posing, I always try to apply specific rules and simple framing/posing.
Something really important for me is the technic of the 3H
”Head - Hands and Hips”
It is simple framing used in cinematography but really reliable. Always things of framing these things.
